  icon_eek.gif  ironman update - another one! 2008-Nov-13
i believe this is the 3rd one...

it's such a long freaking preparation, you could write a novel during the build-up!

i just booked my flight and hotel, which is one step closer to the finish line...now I have the following to do still before getting away, it's like a marathon just getting ready for this damm thing:

- pick-up some fast Zipp wheels so I can stay a little closer to the fast people on bikes worth more than my 4-year old minivan

- clean my bike and the ...  read more

Toronto Marathon - October 2008

I ran the Toronto Marathon and had a great day. The best part is that I ran 35km with Art Kilgour of guelph - a super nice guy. My legs are a little tired, but i finished the last 5km strong and felt good at the finish. I am very excited about NY. I can hardly wait. The only drag is missing Hallowe'en.

But here is my sh ...  read more

  icon_lol.gif  athlete intervention... 2008-Oct-01
maybe this headline has your attention.

ATHLETE INTERVENTION!!!

I believe you may know where I am going with this, possibly you are reading this and we're talking about you.

I meet alot of people in the course of my day-to-day travels, conversations and communications with athletes. I have also been there, done that when I look back on my running career and found myself avoiding social situations and once doing a track work-out at 10pm on a saturday nite...

  icon_lol.gif  reward yourself.. 2008-Sep-23
yes, life these days is chock-full of rewards and member benefits.

but we're talking sweets and indulgences here folks, mostly..

I read an article from a long-ago friend, who only eats french fries after she runs a marathon. never again throughout the year, how crazy is that!

advice to friend...run more than one marathon, how can you deprive yourself of french fries!

it got me thinking though....

i always used to lecture runners in clinics on the creat ...  read more

can yu believe this?

I just read in a magazine (GQ 2002 - in case you're wondering), there is, or was, actually a category in the Guiness Record Book.

World's Fittest Man.

wow.

check this out, Joe Decker must have had a whack of free time on his hands:

The challenge consists of the greatest cumulative distance and totals completed in a designated series of sporting activities by an individual over a 24-hour period.

icon_frown.gif  Olympic insider / guest blogger / final post 2008-Aug-25
....this is the last post from our rowing insider, Heather Mandoli.

Hello

Well we gave it all we had, and unfortunately that fell just short of a medal. We really rowed our very best and left everything we had out of the water, but three other crews were able to do it just a bit better than us today. We were so close, which I think makes it even tougher to swallow. But I know deep down we could not have done anything more. I am so proud of my boat mates and myself for that. ...  read more

  icon_goofy.gif  marathon drinks... 2008-Aug-24
i was watching the men's Olympic Marathon last night, always an entertaining race!

ever since I started marathon running, I became fascinated with the issue of fuel, how best to prepare, what to drink while running, etc.

the sport has come a long way since the days of pre-science, when it was actually forbidden to take fluids (legally) while the race was in-progress, imagine that!

very early in my career, I knew intuitively that many of the sports drinks offered were not exa ...  read more

Due to time differences between China and the rest of the world, I have written this week's newsletter before the actual Olympic Women's Triathlon race has taken place, but you will actually get the newsletter the morning after the race has been televised on CBC. Later tonight (Monday 18th) at 10pm EST, Simon will try to see if he can make his magic occur one more time.

My flight to Beijing from Toronto had some Canadian Olympians on the plane including our female triathlete Kathy Trem ...  read more

Today's little racing adventure;

Warm up is finished. Last sips of water have just being taken. The final check is done and everything is tight on the boat. The typical pre race butterflies are in the stomach right where they belong. Everything looks good and I feel ready to race my very first Olympic race. The thought running through my head at that very moment was, in ten minutes I am officially going to be an Olympian…. And then over the loud speaker the starting official says, Canada please r ...  read more

  icon_mrgreen.gif  the new challenge... 2008-Aug-11
well, my Ironman training is well under way...finally.

I procrastinated immensely all spring and summer, a little bit of training here and there, too much partying and socializing, no training plan that any newbie would want to follow!

having just completed my first 1/2 Ironman, yesterday, I now know how difficult it will be to get out of the water ALIVE with 2000+ other swimmers fighting for the same limited space, and how tough the run will be after the 180km bike ride.

icon_razz.gif  my new sports hero... 2008-Aug-04
Uncle Benny.

my Uncle Benny....

let me explain, hopefully we all have some athetic heroes in our life, sometimes they are closer to us than we know.

I grew up very much into sports, in spite of a pretty non-sporting family (3 sisters, more artistic than athletic), and an old-fashioned father from Italy who started late in life into sports.

I was a big t.v. watcher though....

My first hero was Stan Mikita, of the Chicago Blackhawks. I don't know how thi ...  read more

icon_confused.gif  drugs, drugs and more drugs... 2008-Jul-24
so I guess I am not the first person to add my comment on this subject!

just google the words, drugs in sport and you'll find over 750,000 references, so where would you begin anyway?

The main question is, why would I even want to delve into this topic, when it's been beaten over the head more times than Igor the Queen Street bike thief has flipped used bikes...

  icon_eek.gif  bird bath etiquette 2008-Jul-18
never heard of an endurance sports bird bath?

read on, you may find yourself in the same washroom one day!

I was first introduced to the concept when I first started running, but I believe it was already in my nature and disposition to act thus when I played competitive tennis and golf. Both sports had the added element of post-match socializing, and as often as possible I preferred to clean myself up before sitting down for the apres sport time (beer, salty snacks and commisserating  ...  read more
