New York With runners like these, American Olympic hopes are high again

To hear the favorites to make the U.S. Men’s Olympic Marathon team talk about their lives, their hopes, and one another is to wish that there were ten qualifying spots. But there are only three, and that cutthroat format makes it coldly true that among Alan Culpepper, Ryan Hall, Abdi Abdirahman, Dathan Ritzenhein, and Brian Sell, at least two will not be on the U.S. Olympic team for Beijing next year.

New York Patience paid off for South African Hendrik Ramaala, as the 32-year-old rode two big surges to victory in the 35th running of the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday in 2:09:28. In his eleventh try at the distance, Ramaala used a trick learned from his South African teammate and friend, 1996 Olympic marathon champion, Josia Thugwane, and skipped grabbing a water bottle at the water stop between miles 23 and 24 and opened a gap on runner-up Meb Keflezighi and third place finisher, Timothy Cherigat of Kenya. It was a gap they couldn't close.

New York In what was the closest women's finish ever at the New York City Marathon, Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe out-gutted Kenya's Susan Chepkemei in the final 200 meters to win by four seconds, 2:23:10 for Radcliffe to 2:23:14 for Chepkemei. The win was also, and perhaps foremost, sweet redemption for Radcliffe, the world record holder, who had dropped out of the Olympic marathon in Athens 70 days ago, and entered New York with one thing in mind.
