My fourth Ironman and yet again in Brazil; back in 2004 Brandon had made it clear that we were “not coming back to Brazil”; not because we didn't enjoy Brazil, not because we didn't have good races (we did) but just because there are other places to see and other races to do. We hit time station #42 last night in Troy , OH . There were periods of heavy rain, but around midnight the waterworks finally stopped and Kevin had a clear night sky to ride under. Bob and Jeff took turns talking to Kevin over the loudspeaker, trying to keep him focused and energized. Read full article: 'Race Across America - Day 9 Updates' (1938 words in this article)

Early this morning, around 5, Kevin briefly stopped for a shake. He’s been hammering the pedals at 18-19-20 mph to reel in the riders ahead of him and burning thousands of calories. We had a team meeting in the back of the bus around making our stops more efficient; we must get Kevin back out on the road as quickly possible.Note: Go Kevin Go!

It’s like déjà vu all over again. We crossed over a set of railway tracks and found ourselves in a new state. This time it’s Missouri. We’ve left Kansas behind and, with it, most of the wind. The land of Dorothy and Toto delivered gusts that had Kevin’s bike at a 45-degree angle. The wind was absolutely relentless. Note: Make a donation today and help Kevin raise $250,000!

Half way. It’s a significant milestone to pass. Closer to the end than the beginning. Closer to the Atlantic than the Pacific. Outside of Maize, Kansas, Kevin hit the 1,521.4 marker and crossed over into the second half of the race. The crew staged a roadside celebration with lots of words of encouragement as he rode by. The prairie wind has changed from a boon to a hindrance. The riders are forced to pedal against it most of the time now instead of having it at their backs. The protection of town streets with houses and trees to block the wind are few and far between out here. We had to make a brief stop in Wichita to pick up some bike parts. It turns out Ruth, who owns the Bike Peddler, is a breast cancer survivor. Thanks for your help Ruth. In El Dorado the crew members of the Bus and Support Vehicle were approached by a young boy and his family. Braden Weber, 9 had been following the race and wanted to help. He simply held out his blue piggy bank that he had been filling for five months. The contents would normally have been deposited in the bank as part of his savings, but this time he decided to deposit it with us. Thanks Braden! Bob Langley interviewed Braden and his mom, so be sure to listen to the accompanying audio file. For photos, check out the photos from today. This afternoon Kevin rides on to Yates Center, Iola and points further east. Robert Langley Interviews Braden Click here to listen/download. Robert Langley Day6 Morning Commentary Click here to listen/download. Dr Pat. Hewitt Friday started at 6:00 AM and ended at 4:00 AM Saturday. Today was all about The Wizard of Oz – 40+ mph hot, dry winds into Kevin’s face all day. When watching someone as strong as Kev ride, it is easy to lose perspective that the movement is man-made. No effort, no progress… Life is just like that; whether playing sport, improving your health or managing relationships…no effort, no progress. Right near the ½ way point of RAAM, Peter read 2 dedications at the side of the road. Within seconds, emotions were off the charts, tears were shed, first of sorrow and concern for the individuals in the dedications, followed by laughter and tears (now of joy) over the opportunity to be here, in this ride, and have the chance to drop all that doesn’t matter and truly stand in the presence of what ultimately matters most – people. People trying to make the world a different place for other people – all other people. Jack Hewitt How coincidental is this to the trip? The owner of the bike shop that we found had some parts we required was just back from doing race support for 1,000 riders doing a Charity Ride Across Kansas. She was apologizing to us because some of the things we needed were still packed up in the boxes used at the race. The had arrived back in the shop at midnight and were at the store early to open up just to get us some spare parts. We picked up a replacement seat, spare lights for the bike and some glue. The delightful irony is that she is a ten-year breast cancer survivor. Thanks to Ruby at the Bicycle Pedaler in Wichita, Kansas. She is a fan of RAAM. J. Day 4 SummaryHeading out from Durango, Kevin rode the dark, winding roads toward Pagosa Springs, CO. The elevation changes were starting to come quickly, providing a hint as to the big climbs to come. The first major challenge came in the form of Wolf Creek pass – a 2,700 foot climb over 8 miles. The elevation gain came with a commensurate drop in temperature; some of the pictures from today will show Kevin wearing his leggings and booties. After the bottle exchange in Tuba City we headed to Kayenta and the entrance to Monument Valley. The bizarre rock formations brought Saturday morning cartoons to mind…it wouldn’t have surprised us to see Wile E. Coyote impotently chasing the Roadrunner. Solitary rocks jutting out of the ground with impossibly balanced table tops provided a stirring backdrop to Kevin’s steady pace across Arizona.Crew and rider shut down for hour hours in the early afternoon for some much needed rest. Jack Hewitt and Mike Kolesar drove into the nearest town to fix a tire on the Follow Van, while others used their time to clean up. The shower bag was an effective tool, but others opted for a stack of baby wipes. Ian Mackenzie did some quick work on a shifter in the trailer attached to the Bus. Our destination that evening involved a crossing of the state border into Colorado, en route to Durango. Soon, the morning sun would reveal the mountains and the monumental task of achieving enormous gains in elevation. Note: stay tuned for more updates as Kevin Wallace from Canada goes after the World Record...
