Between Friday, April 24 and Saturday, May 2, 2009, ORTA's Executive Director, “Hiker Harold” Sellers will be walking the Oak Ridges Trail, end to end, over these nine consecutive days.
Each day I'll walk a section of the trail, from Palgrave to Gore's Landing, a total distance of 213.5 km. Daily distances range from 17.5 to 27 km.
I'm doing this to raise funds for the trail and also to raise awareness amongst those who know little or nothing about our favourite trail.
Note: Thanks to "Hiker Harold" Sellers, Executive Director of the Oak Ridges Trail Association for the article.

When Jennifer Figge touched the shores of Trinidad last Thursday, the 56-year-old American completed a 3,400 kilometre, 24-day journey that began on Africa's Cape Verde Islands and ended on an abandoned leper colony. She became the first woman to swim across the Atlantic, a world record, perhaps.
But how much of it did she actually swim?

I used to think anyone who ran a marathon was crazy. That was before I did one myself. Now I think people who compete in Ironman triathlons are nuts. But there are some athletes whose activities leave even Ironman competitors scratching their heads.

Regrettably, this is my final post from Athens. It is Sunday evening and the final events are taking place. Wrestling, Taekwando, Volleyball and the men's marathon are going on. They will be followed by the closing ceremonies, expected to be a great show. Around me, our office is physically in boxes and crates; we're packing up computers and preparing cargo for its boat ride home to Canada. It'll be a long all-nighter tonight as we've been tasked with the IT tear-down which starts during the closing ceremonies, in hopes that we get everything done while the athletes and coaches are away. Upon their return (around 1am), there is a big outdoor party planned for all. We'll break from the work for that and resume a few hours later and likely work until late tomorrow.

Today was a long and tough day for me. It started very early as I caught a shuttle out to the triathlon venue (located about an hour from where I'm staying), saw the women's triathlon, took a long bus back, ate, worked from 3pm to 1am, took a bus back to our house, watched a bit more Olympics and called it a night. It was both an
exciting day and a very depressing one. The excitement came from the triathlon and its amazing venue and the exciting sprint finish.

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
The Games are in full-swing and the last two days have gone by in a blur. At the Canadian Team administration office, things are getting very busy again as athletes are moving out and athletes who competed at offsite venues are moving into the village to enjoy the lifestyle and partake in the closing ceremonies. There is quite a contrast right now between those athletes still competing and those who have finished their events. Coordinating all of these moves is quite a challenge and has made the work more exciting and fun with the main challenge being to keep the athletes who are finished from bothering those whose events are still to come.

Tonight the 'big show' of the Olympic Games started. Commonly referred to as 'track and field', the 9 days of athletics events draws the largest crowds of the Games and includes its highest profile events. From these events come Olympic champions who are crowned the 'Worlds Greatest Athletes" (decathlon/heptathlon) and the 'World's Fastest Man/Woman" (100m dash).

To my surprise, I recently discovered that aquatics accreditation doesn’t simply incorporate swimming, it also includes Diving, Water-Polo and Synchronized Swimming – all sports I’ve never before seen live.

Today’s entry comprises two anecdotal stories, one sport related and one administration related. Judging from how ambush marketing was received, I think you’ll find them interesting.

If you read yesterday, you know that I was privy to an incredible experience last night when I walked with the Canadian Team into the Olympic Stadium as part of the Opening Ceremonies. I was prouder to be Canadian than I’d ever been before. As we walked through the tunnel leading to the stadium, you could hear the incredible roar of the crowd and gradually see, with each passing step, more and more of the packed stadium.

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
Things have hit a frantic pace around here.you can feel the excitement and the rush as the Games are just a few hours away. In reality, they have actually started as events like archery and soccer have begun their preliminary rounds. Media interest is peaking and cameras are everywhere. Here's a quick pic of a Canadian athlete (a synchronized swimmer) doing an interview following Team Canada's flag raising ceremony:

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
Following two days of discussion around sponsorship, today we'll return our topic to Athens itself and what is happening here from an administrator's point of view. As the days go by and the work takes on a 'regular' nature, it is easy to sway away from the day-to-day routine. Honestly, I often forget where I am until Andy Roddick taps me on the shoulder and asks for directions in the cafeteria!

Yesterday's anecdote about McDonalds generated many responses ranging from irate distaste of McDonalds to firm support of their offering and the nutritional value of their foods. It seems we have a divided readership, which itself is very interesting. One thing that a few of you mentioned is the movie "Super size me", which I have never seen. Allegedly, it is about a guy who lives off McDonalds alone for a month and the outcomes are worth seeing. A few even recommended that some athlete's watch it.

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
Since today was another long (but fun!) admin. day with much of what you've already read about happening again, I thought I'd take a few lines and write a bit about a specific observation that I've had over the my first 10 days in Athens. In this case, it is about one of the IOC's TOP ('The Olympic Program') sponsors, McDonalds and their presence here in Athens.

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
I am writing this email in the early morning of August 9th following a very busy day that saw over 150 Canadians arrive in the village. It was chaotic at times but the service provided to the athletes and teams on arrival was very high. They were welcomed and set up in their accommodations in minutes. About a dozen people (myself included) worked from 8am to 2am (some even to 4am) to welcome and help get set up the many teams that arrived through the day and night. ATHOC made things much easier as they have done an incredible job being prepared and airport transfers, customs, luggage, and security have all been extremely efficient. For the most part, athletes and coaches arrive to the village not too long after their flights landed.

Well today was another interesting day in the admin office. Interesting and long! Many of the athletes have now arrived and the entire mission staff is here. The village is starting to 'buzz' and the final touché are quickly being completed. Grass, trees and flowers are being brought in at an incredible rate and the village is looking better and better all the time. As each day passes, things get better and better here. In the day-to-day administration duties of keys, repairs, databases, emails, etc., sometimes I forget where I am and then a vision or a meeting with some incredible athlete snaps me out of my trance. Today, for example, I met no less than 10 former Olympic medallists. For me, as a sport aficionado, a former middle-of-the-road athlete and a student of sport, experiences like this are both special and humbling.

From the surprising amount of feedback I am receiving, it appears that people are enjoying the emails but that some are receiving them more than once. I apologize for any inconvenience. I am sending the messages remotely from Athens, so that could be the cause of the problem. Now, if you are getting this message multiple times and would rather not, please let me know.

Today - also (and more importantly) my dad's birthday - was a prime example of administration challenge in full flight. It was kind of appropriate given that my father is both an entrepreneur and a manager.

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
It is midnight and about 28 or 30 degrees in Athens...I'm sitting on the porch of my athlete's village apartment writing about today. The weather here is truly amazing.day after day of hot temperatures and sunny skies (from what I'm told my 2 days are what it has been like for a month). Of course, I spent all day in an air conditioned office and - as such - there isn't much to say despite a day of consistent work that started about 8am this morning. It is truly amazing how much work goes into supporting an Olympic Team's quest for high performance.

Olympic Diary: An Administrator's View of the Athens 2004 Olympic Summer Games
Dear Friends,
Based on previous email lists I've been privy to have received (such as Barrie
Shepley's famous notes from Sydney 2000), I've decided to try and send a daily note from Athens describing my experiences as an administrator for the Canadian Olympic Committee's Mission Staff. It likely won't be as exciting as an athlete's report or as pressure-packed as a coach's view but perhaps you'll enjoying see some of the 'management-side' of major Events and how things function. If you'd rather not, just let me know with a quick email and I'll take you off the list.
