GIRONA, Spain — A coach once told me, “Go until you see Jesus.” Another told me, “Pedal until you taste blood.” Everybody in the Tour de France will suffer; the winner will probably be the one who is prepared to suffer the most.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland announced today its decision regarding ex-Tour de France winner Floyd Landis vs. US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). The court ruled against Landis, ending his fight to clear his name and regain his Tour victory. Landis will have to serve the full two-year suspension that is back-dated to January 30, 2007 as that is when he officially declared voluntary non-competition status. Additionally, Landis was ordered to pay $100,000 in costs to the USADA.

Today, is really a tribute to the riders in my group 2. As you may be aware from reading the website, there are three groups of riders, and my group is officially named, ‘Group Two’. Group 1 is comprised of riders who ride speeds of approximately 30-31 km’s per hour, and are very experienced riders — generally riders who have more than 10 years experience behind them. These young bucks are fast, experienced and have been a great asset to all of us through training.

Today is the beginning of the next 20 days. I have mixed feelings as myself and my team arrive at Kipps Beach in Vancouver for the ceremonious wheel dipping in the Pacific Ocean. 19 days later, I am one of the hopefuls that will dip my wheel in the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax. I feel I am trained. I feel I am ready, but still there are butterflies in my stomach.

I arrived in Vancouver on May 30th, 2008 where I met up with 47 other National Riders and 40 National Volunteers. With each flight that arrived over the four day period between May 29th and June 1, it was clear that this is to be a great adventure. National Riders and Volunteers were arriving from all across Canada, some English-speaking and some French-speaking — ranging from 17 to sixty years of young, 40% women, and 60% men.

A foreigner has not won the Giro d'Italia in 12 years and it has been even more, 15 years, since the last Spanish winner claimed the maglia rosa. However, 25 year-old Alberto Contador, winner of the 2007 Tour de France, put a Spanish twist into the normally Italian affair.

We hit time station #42 last night in Troy , OH . There were periods of heavy rain, but around midnight the waterworks finally stopped and Kevin had a clear night sky to ride under. Bob and Jeff took turns talking to Kevin over the loudspeaker, trying to keep him focused and energized.

Early this morning, around 5, Kevin briefly stopped for a shake. He’s been hammering the pedals at 18-19-20 mph to reel in the riders ahead of him and burning thousands of calories. We had a team meeting in the back of the bus around making our stops more efficient; we must get Kevin back out on the road as quickly possible.

It’s like déjà vu all over again. We crossed over a set of railway tracks and found ourselves in a new state. This time it’s Missouri. We’ve left Kansas behind and, with it, most of the wind. The land of Dorothy and Toto delivered gusts that had Kevin’s bike at a 45-degree angle. The wind was absolutely relentless.

Half way.
It’s a significant milestone to pass. Closer to the end than the beginning. Closer to the Atlantic than the Pacific. Outside of Maize, Kansas, Kevin hit the 1,521.4 marker and crossed over into the second half of the race. The crew staged a roadside celebration with lots of words of encouragement as he rode by.
The prairie wind has changed from a boon to a hindrance. The riders are forced to pedal against it most of the time now instead of having it at their backs. The protection of town streets with houses and trees to block the wind are few and far between out here.
We had to make a brief stop in Wichita to pick up some bike parts. It turns out Ruth, who owns the Bike Peddler, is a breast cancer survivor. Thanks for your help Ruth.
In El Dorado the crew members of the Bus and Support Vehicle were approached by a young boy and his family. Braden Weber, 9 had been following the race and wanted to help. He simply held out his blue piggy bank that he had been filling for five months. The contents would normally have been deposited in the bank as part of his savings, but this time he decided to deposit it with us. Thanks Braden!
Bob Langley interviewed Braden and his mom, so be sure to listen to the accompanying audio file. For photos, check out the photos from today.
This afternoon Kevin rides on to Yates Center, Iola and points further east.

Friday started at 6:00 AM and ended at 4:00 AM Saturday.
Today was all about The Wizard of Oz – 40+ mph hot, dry winds into Kevin’s face all day.
When watching someone as strong as Kev ride, it is easy to lose perspective that the movement is man-made. No effort, no progress…
Life is just like that; whether playing sport, improving your health or managing relationships…no effort, no progress.
Right near the ½ way point of RAAM, Peter read 2 dedications at the side of the road. Within seconds, emotions were off the charts, tears were shed, first of sorrow and concern for the individuals in the dedications, followed by laughter and tears (now of joy) over the opportunity to be here, in this ride, and have the chance to drop all that doesn’t matter and truly stand in the presence of what ultimately matters most – people.
People trying to make the world a different place for other people – all other people.
Jack Hewitt
How coincidental is this to the trip? The owner of the bike shop that we found had some parts we required was just back from doing race support for 1,000 riders doing a Charity Ride Across Kansas.
She was apologizing to us because some of the things we needed were still packed up in the boxes used at the race. The had arrived back in the shop at midnight and were at the store early to open up just to get us some spare parts. We picked up a replacement seat, spare lights for the bike and some glue.
The delightful irony is that she is a ten-year breast cancer survivor.
Thanks to Ruby at the Bicycle Pedaler in Wichita, Kansas. She is a fan of RAAM.

Day 4 Summary
Heading out from Durango, Kevin rode the dark, winding roads toward Pagosa Springs, CO. The elevation changes were starting to come quickly, providing a hint as to the big climbs to come. The first major challenge came in the form of Wolf Creek pass – a 2,700 foot climb over 8 miles. The elevation gain came with a commensurate drop in temperature; some of the pictures from today will show Kevin wearing his leggings and booties.

After the bottle exchange in Tuba City we headed to Kayenta and the entrance to Monument Valley. The bizarre rock formations brought Saturday morning cartoons to mind…it wouldn’t have surprised us to see Wile E. Coyote impotently chasing the Roadrunner. Solitary rocks jutting out of the ground with impossibly balanced table tops provided a stirring backdrop to Kevin’s steady pace across Arizona.
Crew and rider shut down for hour hours in the early afternoon for some much needed rest. Jack Hewitt and Mike Kolesar drove into the nearest town to fix a tire on the Follow Van, while others used their time to clean up. The shower bag was an effective tool, but others opted for a stack of baby wipes. Ian Mackenzie did some quick work on a shifter in the trailer attached to the Bus.
Our destination that evening involved a crossing of the state border into Colorado, en route to Durango. Soon, the morning sun would reveal the mountains and the monumental task of achieving enormous gains in elevation.

Mississauga's very own Kevin Wallace attempts a world-record effort.
Note: Kevin's ride is in the name of his mother who passed away from cancer, and all the proceeds will go to breast cancer prevention and research. In the last decade, Kevin has raised nearly $2.7 million dollars through his very successful Gears 24 Hour indoor cycling rides each February. Kevin will start his epic solo ride Sunday June 11th and hopes to be finished before the first day of summer. To follow Kevin on his personal journey check out the race website at www.teamrace.com.

This summer Ironman athlete and founder of OYE! Tours, Gerry Molinolo will cycle 1,200 kilometres across Cuba to attract the attention of Canadian bike shops, cycling enthusiasts and lovers of all-things-Cuban*. Her goal is to take down much needed bikes and equipment for the Academia de Ciclismo in Ciego de Avila. It’s a long ride for a young woman to do all by herself (and the hot Cuban sun to contend with), but Gerry feels strongly about putting in an effort that equals what she is asking for.
